African-American Heritage Figurines Boy & Girl with Toys

Before the Electronic Age, before television and even radio, children entertained themselves with simple toys appropriate to their gender roles. So, the little girl rides a wooden rocking elephant with a horse's tail (!). It's impossible to rock because it's runners are piled high with other treasures: a plush long-eared rabbit, a book and a "white" doll baby (which would be typical of a time before "black was beautiful.") She wears red shoes, pink socks that match her pink dress with short, puffy sleeves and white ruffle trim.  Of course, no properly dressed young lady would think of doing anything - even playing - without her hat, purple decorated with red roses. Our boy is dressed more casually with red baseball cap, blue shorts with suspenders, and short sleeved scoop-neck shirtbut he still wears dress shoes.  Around his rocking horse are a soccer ball, spining top, drum, more balls, and a "white" toy soldier. Both are centered on fringed round throw rugs on a wooden planked floor.  The painting of the faces are conventional - upraised eyes and pink lips reveal details that would otherwise be obscured by brown colored skin. Resin, imported. Collected prior to 2006.
