This mask is different because it lacks typical red accents. The black monochromatic features complement the silhoutte that uses negative space (the voids and contours) to great dramatic effect. Also omitted are the rows of tiny parallel dashes for surface decoration. In contrast to delicacy, there is feeling of solidity created by the massive forehead, the elaborate headdress, plump braids on both sides of the jawline and a geometric top knot. The whole mask is visually anchored by the stubby, truncated beard. Wood, handcrafted in Kenya. Collected prior to 2006.
