African-style mask, framed, I

"Realistic" facial features and elaborate  hair arrangements with curls that  form a sculptural headdress.  Red-painted face, grey hair/headdress, blackened eyes, nose and lips, the type and location of scarification as well as the framed presentation are idiosyncratic.  The black shadow box frame is incised with a bovine head, female heads with earrings and prominant headdresses , and horned quadrupeds.  Contrasting textures of the richly patterned top mat and horizontal ribbed background draws attention to the centrally mounted mask.  Not  a traditional mask but it exhibits a high degree of imagination and care in execution which is superior to many crudely "made in Africa" carvings manufactured for foreign tourists looking for cheap souvenirs. Resin, paper, and glass.  Imported ca. 2006
