African Decorative Mask with Puffy Braids

A low relief vertical line divides the face symetrically then it merges with the eyebrows before continuing down to form the bridge of the nose.  The double crescent shaped headdress fuses into the forehead. The wide open eyes are a counterpoint to the closed lips.  Fine incised dashes delicately renders the face in quiet repose.  The mask is painted in two shades of deep "mahogany" red (the color probably comes from modern Oxblood red shoe polish rather than from traditional organic sources such as palm oil or crushed berries.  Stained and painted wood, handcrafted in Kenya.  Collected prior to 2006.
