African Decorative Congolese Mask I
This mask is suggestive of traditional Jokwe dance masks of the Kasai region, named Mwana Pwo ("young girl") which were used in female initiation ceremonies. Such masks were enhanced by keloidal scarification around the mouth and on the forehead beneath elaborately braided coiffures.  The rounded volumes of hair, cheeks and eyes gives the face a naturalism that hints at portraiture .  In contrast, the strong symmetry of the face, pyramidal protruding eyes, nose and mouth as well as the tessare shaped scarification emphasizes an underlying geometry that counters the idea that this is the face of a "real" person.
