African Batik Wall Hanging-signed,Kenya

This untitled piece depicts an everyday scene  of a crowded market under the distinctive baobab tree that is almost a symbol synonymous with any country on the east  African savannah.  The already unique traditional resist-dye (batik) technique of decorating fabric is executed by a master of composition and the application of multiple colors.  He/she is ready to let everyone know of his/her high level of skill because of the signature (unfortunately, undecipherable) in the lower right corner.  The slight bird's eye perspective suggests depth despite the decidedly two-dimensional, vertical orientation.  The artist retains the original white of the fabric and adds a sucessive layers of three other colors which gives off an exquisite glow similar to that of stained glass.  Dyed Cotton from Kenya, privately collected prior to 2006.
