The lone stark tree has bare branches with sparse tuffs of foilage at the very top and the extensive expanse of brown earth attest to the desert-like climate that make human survival particularly difficult in rural east Africa. A single elderly caretaker (note the stoop shoulders and walking staff) keeps watch over a compound where one bovine stands before a tub of water next to one of only three small circular huts with tall conical thatched roofs. Sundried plant leaves, tiny twigs and grasses have been painted with shellac before being glued onto black muslin. Handcrafted in Kenya. Collected prior to 2006.
